16 Mercurys entered the series opener. Three races Saturday and three on Sunday. The predicted weather was very unpredictable, heavy wind, light wind and maybe rain. The first race was light followed by a 15 knot breeze and then settling to shifty lighter air.
The first race was a double sausage finishing downwind. The start had the wind shifting to a tight reach. Jim and Kathy Bradley saw it coming and were never headed on the first lap. The course was adjusted almost 90 degrees and they went on to win. Dave Morris with Jared January were able to pass two boats to place second. Lyn and Odile hines placed third followed by Pax Davis with Tony Basso in the fourth spot.Mark and Liz Chandler ended up in fifth place.
Race two, more change in the wind. The racing was done on a triple sausage, finishing downwind. The breeze was 15 knots win d a mean chop. The course to sail was go to the shore and work the shifts. No problem for Dave West with Chris Krueger. They were off at the start and led all the way after the first weather mark. Randy Smith with John Verdoia placed second followed by Morris, Bradley and John Mowry with Jacob Poletti. .
Race was three times around again and it was all West, nobody close. The breeze got much lighter on the shore, and was better off shore. Bradley held off Smith to place second and lead the regatta after the first day. Smith was third followed by Mowry and Davis to round out the top five.
Day two was a perfect day. The breeze was relatively steady and light , about 5kts. The three races were all twice around windward leeward, finishing downwind. There was a little chop on the water. Davis went on a long port tack from the start feeling that there was more wind that way. This gave him a nice lead at the weather mark. He went on to win as the course was shortened at the leeward mark. Morris followed in second place. Doug and Michael Baird, racing only Sunday, were third. Bradley was fourth followed by Chandler.
Race five was all West as he built a nice lead as the breeze might have peaked at about 8kts. The left side of the course became the favored side, but the wind was spotty. Bradley was second followed by Smith. Baird was fourth followed by Dave Bacci with Patrick Tregenza sailing his best race.
Race six had Smith wining a tight one as the breeze was fading slightly.. West was over early , but the outside had a little more breeze and a lift that put him back into the race. He was second. Morris was third followed by Mowry and Baird.
Congratulations to Dave West for winning the gold fleet and to Dave Bacci for winning the silver fleet.
