Eleven Mercs entered the 68th edition of this regatta. There was a hot spell over Northern California wit the temperature 90 degrees plus. There was more breeze in the harbor to start the day, around4 knots and the fleet drifted around the committee boat for over two hours.
Finally a little westerly came in and the race was on. The course was a double sausage, finishing downwind. The advantage was to sail to the kelp where the most wind was. Scott Easom with Ben Mitchell went where the wind was and led the entire race. There was a narrow shear down the middle of the course with a southerly on the south side. Easom handled it very well. Doug Baird with Kate Chandler, after the first mark figured the wind out and placed second. Mark and Liz Chandler finished third.
Day two was a similar weather pattern, but wind puffs from every direction for 5-10 minutes or so. This was a no race day.
The trophy presentation took place at 4 PM. Congratulations to Scott Easom for his first place win in the first regatta for his rehabilitated Merc. Lyn and Odile hines won the Silver Trophy and Chris Davis with Bob Scholl placed second in the silver group. Many thanks to Dick Clark and his group, Chip and Joanie Woods, The Wombles and Toot, the committee boat and Charlie Kurtman. This was a very warm nice weekend.
